slow networking / copy performance

Hi
I am having problems with slow copy of files from one w2003 (R2) server to
another. I have a domain with 1 w2k domain controller and a new w2003 dc
which will replace the w2k dc. further more 2 terminal servers (w2k) and 2
w2003 terminal servers which will replace the old w2k servers.
When coping about 250 Mb from the w2003 fileserver to one of the w2003
servers (dc or ts) it takes about 168 minutes to copy. When copying from the
w2003 fileserver to a w2k ts it takes about 8 minutes. Browsing is slow and
programs started from the fileserver share do not start, but the executables
remain in memory.
Anyone can help?

Thanks
Luit

Hello,

sounds to me a network problem, like duplex mismatch.
does nestat -e indicate a lot of errors ?

In your mail, is the test from the same server ?

can you explain again the difference you notice between servers, but naming
them server A,B,C so i can sort out your test in my mind ?

Sure
A = Fileserver w2k3
B = Terminal server w2k3
C = Terminal server w2k

1. copy file 256 Mb from A to B takes 168 min (according to MS)
2. copy file 256 Mb from A to C takes about 8 min (according to MS)

So the bad guy would be server B.
Can you check it's errors (netstat -e) ?
May you switch its network cable with server C and test again between A &
B?

Do you configure your switch to force duplex/speed?

Mathieu,
That's an idea. I had some problems in the past with the NICS in the servers
being on AUTO, changed this to 100 FD and the problems were over. Will try to
perform the same on the switch ports. Thanks, will let you know the outcome.

hello,

whenever you force speed on one side, you MUST do the same on the other
side.
Else one will be in full-duplex, the other in half duplex. This result in
huge packet loss and retransmission.

On gigabit, you should NOT force the speed.

Well that was indeed the problem, 300 Mb files go from w2k3 server to another
in seconds. Thanks !
