Slow network transfer within LAN

Hello,

I am noticing; well I have always noticed with Windows that when you
need to drag and drop files between computers they always go slow. We're
talking 1-2% of a 100Mbs 100% switch LAN. It's getting annoying and I
was wondering what I can do to speed things up.

Transfers are between XP and XP and XP and 2003 just dragging and
dropping with in mapped and unmapped drives.

If I do FTP, HTTP, SSH, and other transfers on the Internet I can
saturate the Internet connection. When I use to run an FTP server on the
LAN I was able to reach 100% through put. Why can't I without the FTP
server. I want to avoid the FTP server on the LAN as I'd like to just
stick with my mapped drives.

Thanks,

TC

I forgot to mention I am network/system administrator.

Thanks again,

Try disabling SMB signing.

Here are some pertinent articles:

you work with files that are located on a file server:

Thank you for the links. I will have to read them and see what I can
come up with. I am totally blanking right now on what SMB signing is? I
want to say it's an authentication or other security/encryption based
off the name. If that is the case I was wondering the ramifications.

Thanks,

TC

In a layman's nutshell, Server Message Block (SMB) signing 'tags' each
packet with a signature only understood between domain members. Howvver
pre-Win98 SE machines, and pre- NT40 SP4 machines, as well as MACs and other
non-Microsoft operatings systems, cannot understand or communicate using
this method when they conenct as a UNC (such as a mapped drive or thru a Run
command). This is especially indicative in a mixed Mac/Linux with Samba,
etc, environment. Disabling it allows communication.

Error Message When Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 Client Logs On to Windows
Server 2003 Domain

But that is only part of what can be happening. There are numerous other
factors, which my previous list of links show. Whenever there is network
slowness, unless there's a minimal of apps installed and in use, it is
sometimes difficult to diagnose. One of the links indicate a 3rd party
application can be causing it.

Read up and see which applies to your situation the best.

Happy Holidays!

Ace
