slow network speeds with Linux 9

Hi Folks,
I'm getting very slow network speeds for XP/W2k clients to Red Hat Linux
9 (slow Apache pages (phpinfo can take minutes to complete, ftp - gets
transfer speeds 6-7 kb/sec). I know the Linux hardware is ok as i can place
a W2k install disk in the chasis and the network transfers come in at
9000kb/sec. Simailarly, FTPing betwen the XP client and a W2k Server on the
same network can deliver 10500kb/sec.Just wondered if there are any known
issues in this area, or anything i can check.

Network is pretty staright forward, SMS router, mixture of W2k servers, XP
Home and Linux 9 Server.
Linux install is clean and defaulted

Ethernet duplex mismatch would be my guess.
