Slow network browsing on windows 2003 machine -help

Hi there,

I have set of machines on a workgroup. One machine acts as a server.

I have several XP boxes that are assigned IPs dynamically from my router and
a windows 2003 server machine which currently acts as a file server.

They are all on on the same subnet and same network.

The problem that I have is that when I try and browse folders on the server
2003 I have to wait about 20 seconds before I can gain access. It does not
access the machine immediatly - I have turned indexing off, and I have also
tried to fix the ip of the server to effect.

any ideas to help me out guys? this is annoying for myself and for my team.

any help is most appreciated...

thanks in advance,

ants

Can you describe your DNS setup?

If you run DNS on your Windows Server box, set up a forwarder from the
Windows Server DNS to your ISP DNS IPs, point the Windows Server to itself
only and point the XP machines to the Windows Server, I think you'd find
things run a lot more quickly.

Regards

Oli

Hi Oli,

I don't have DNS installed on the 2003 box.

currently, my router acts as the dns server/gateway, and then forwards the
remaining lookups to the isp. would it still be prefential to install dns on
the serveR?

thanks, I'll give this a try... - however, does this have to be done on the

I tried that, and it did nothing.

I had the exact same problem, tried the two fixes
recommended here. Neither worked, but the problem did
clear up about a week ago. The only chage I made was on
the server in DNS, accepting only secure updates.

One way to test whether it's name resolution (in which case a local DNS
server would help) or the issue that RJ mentioned would be to test the
difference in speed between going to (Start | Run | \\192.168.1.1) and going
to (Start | Run | \\machinename), obviously replacing 192.168.1.1 with the
correct IP address.

I'd be very surprised if your router was actually a DNS server. More than
likely, it just uses its built-in DHCP server to provide your ISP's DNS
settings to your machine. Running ipconfig /all on a client will tell you
for sure, though.

Regards

Oli
