Slow logons on XP to Win2003 over VLANs

We're getting slow logons to W2k3 from XP workstations.
The XP workstations have their DNS pointed to the W2k3
domain controller that has DNS installed. What I find is
that if XP Pro is logging on from same VLAN as W2k3
server, logons are normal. But if over different VLAN it
is very slow. When I pull the network cable during the
slow logons, the attempt dies with message that the
roaming profile could not be found. I suspect that it has
to do with the VLANs since I don't get that problem
otherwise.

Thoughts?

Yup, I was right. When I put the XP workstation on the
same VLAN as the server, the logons processed lickety
split.

some vlan scenarios are really TCPIP subnet based. sounds like you have a
routing problem. Have you tried doing trace routes to the appropriate
servers (if your at win2k or above and have installed supplemental tools
PATHPING works well also),
