Slow logon to 2003 domain and DHCP problems

Over the weekend I did some moving around of computers. A 2.4GHz P4
went from a 2K3 server to a XP Pro machine and a 1GHz P3 went from a XP
Pro machine to a 2K3 server, meanwhile another 2.8GHz P4 stayed the
same and joined the new active directory.

First off, the new server's DHCP server isn't DHCPing, don't begin to
know how to trouble shoot that one.

Second, the new XP Pro machine normally takes about 3~5 minutes from
the time the user enters the password to the desktop appearing. The
other XP Pro machine does not have this problem.

Another problem, while being logged into the new XP Pro machine as user
which is part of both of the admin groups on the AD, trying to add
users to the admin group of the XP Pro box, the location only comes up
with the name of the XP Pro machine, not the AD, though the login
screen does have me logging into the domain.

In the end, I think there is something on the XP Pro machine I need to
change, but I don't have a clue as to what that might be. Can anyone
enlighten me?

This sounds like a classic DNS issue. Make sure that the clients (and the
Domain Controller as well) have only the internal DNS Server IP Address and
*N*O*T* the IP Address of any external DNS Server (like that of your ISP).

However, if your DHCP Service is not running then the clients are not
getting any IP Address leases with the accompanying information (of which
the DNS IP Address is a part).

I had thought that the DNS might be part of the problem and I did shut
down the DNS server on the Solaris server. Login was faster, but not
as fast as I would expect. Also, there is still the issue of managing
uses on the new XP Pro machine...

I am logged in as a user that is an admin on the AD. I go into the
Administrator group to add AD users as admin on the box. First off
there are two entries in the group, the box's administrator and a SID,
no username... When I first installed the box, the XP install could
not find the NIC drivers so I got the XP Home style of login. Once I
added it to the domain, I deleted the initial user that was created. I
believe the SID refers to that deleted user. Next I click Add users
and the location is the local machine. When I click on the Locations
button, the only location is the local machine, there is NO domain.

Again, I do NOT have this problem on the other machine which was not
reinstalled this last weekend.
