Also have had this happen on a clean 2003/xp network we were setting up.
Shares and mapped drives would take a while to display contents. The key was
turning off WebClient service system-wide.
We disabled the WebClient service on the server end, then changed "Default
Domain Security Settings" in the "System Services" subsection to disable it
upon startup, rebooted everyone via the SHUTDOWN -m \\computername -r
command in a batch file.....problem was solved.
Funny side note.....a server support person from MS said that WebClient was
a somewhat half-baked idea that never really got off the ground...not sure if
that's true, but funny coming from a MS person directly.
