Slow / interrupted access to shares

At one of my customer's sites I am having a problem with client machines
being able to access network resources after they have sat idle for some
period of time (generally several hours). This causes problems, since the
client will frequently open a document (most often in Word Perfect), make
changes and walk away at lunch. When he returns, he can't save the document
back to the server. The mapped drive seems to be "disconnected" and will
not reconnect until the user logs off and back on to the machine. Also,
when this happens, it is very slow or impossible to browse the server's
shares (but I can access shares on other client machines) Often, I will get
a message saying that the drive (W could not be reconnected because the
drive letter was already in use. If I disconnect the drive and try to
reconnect, then I get a message about the trust relationship having been
broken.

Server: Windows 2003 / SP1
Clients: Windows XP / SP2

This problem has existed since at least XP SP1 at this site.

After putting up with this issue for another month, several points come to
light.
First, the faster the client computer, the quicker the problem occurs! (the
range is 1-3 hours). Second, it only happens on connections to the W2K3
domain controller! Based on some KB articles, I've tried removing
firewalls, antivirus and anti-spyware to no avail. I'd sure like to find a
solution to this issue. This is one of only 2 pure W2K3 sites that I
maintain (the rest are SBS or W2K). This is the only W2K3 site that was
upgraded from W2K and the only one with this problem (I suspect the two are
connected)

1. The first cause it improperly configured DNS.
2. Another cause is Mapped Drives,..get rid of them, find another solution

Then there are these posibilities, even if the title doesn't seem to match
your situation:

811497 - Error Message When Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 Client
Logs On to Windows Server 2003 Domain
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;811497

321169 - Slow SMB Performance When You Copy Files from Windows XP to a
Windows 2000 Domain
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=321169

Hadn't considered DNS, will check and post back. Will add the other
possibilities to the list of things to check.

Ok, it was sorta/kinda DNS. Turns out that the DNS order specified in DHCP
was external DNS, Internal DNS. I Flipped this around to Internal, External
and all is right with the world. Fixed a couple of other problems in the
process. Thanks for the suggestion.

Can't get rid of the mapped drives, some of the software just won't access
an UNC name.
