Is the "stuttering" PC deficient in memory or CPU horsepower?

A P2/333 is pretty marginal for any kind of multimedia playback. If you
copy the file to your local hard drive and then try to play it, does it
still "stutter"?

No it not just media it's any kind of large file's,one of

Okay, that rules that out. How does the system perform when copying large
files from the "server", especially when compared to the other system that
seems to work well? If the two systems copy files at the same speed you
probably don't have an actual network problem, but if the "stuttering"
system is much slower you may need to look at problems with the network
card, cabling, etc.

Ok, after reading other posts I done some tests and it is
only the one machine and only on receiving files over the
network it can send ok.

It's ok over the "www" .

A 429kb file 29 seconds compared to the rest of the
machine's on the network 2 seconds.

Thing to date:
Removed all of network neighbourhood
changed network card
checked setting.
Changed network cable

Is info stored reg/setting about network neighbourhood
that may need removing to start a fresh ?

Pete

Wow. Quite honestly you've stumped me here. It's odd that it can send a
file without problems. What happens if you try to "send" a file to it -
that is, go to the server, map a drive to the "stuttering" PC, then move or
copy the file from the server to the problem PC?

Yes it stutted from maped drives.

It's not the answer :

Done a big back up soft/files/ect. wiped out windows re-
installed windows and soft/ect and now working fine .

Just wish we could have sorted it some other way but some-
time only a new install will do .

One or two wee jobs left to do but thats life :-))

Thanks for all your help Richard

Pete
