Slow to find network PC's

I have a wireless home network that works well EXCEPT for one thing: If any
one of my 3 PC's is turned off and I click on "My Network Places" (or any app
that uses files residing on the "off" PC), my system practically locks up for
about 4 minutes. I'm guessing that my system is searching the network for
PC's it can't find (not running)?
Question: is there any tweak that will prevent this annoying delay? Thanks.
