slow file copying and deleteing

I've noticed for a while that copying files from an XP workstation to a
W2003 server or deleting files from a share on the server was taking a very
long time.

Today I was deleting a directory full of small files on a mapped network
drive on a W2003 server from my XP Pro SP1 workstation and it was deleting
about two files a second and said it would finish in 55mins.

I wanted to check something unrelated on my C: drive and moved the file
delete progress box over to one side and selected C: in Explorer instead of
the mapped drive I was in the process of deleting from. The deletion
suddenly sped up by an order or two of magnitude, with the files being
deleted faster than I could see and it finished in 30secs instead of 55mins.

Is this a known issue and is there a fix, other than swapping Windows
Explorer away from the mapped drive I'm working on?

Many Thanks

If your server is A DC, you should disable digitally
signed communications on the server and workstations

see : http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=98

Success

Great, that fixed it, many thanks

We're running W2003 not SBS but the fix worked fine

Did you read the reply to "slow file copying and deleting" posted by
CarlC a couple of day ago? Looks pretty similar to your problem.
