Hello Group!
I have recently switched from webhosting provider to a virtual server
provider, and now have a strange issue with the upload speed. I installed
Apache 2.2, and whenever i download something from the server via HTTP i get
a constant speed at around 205 kbyte/s, while my inernet connection normally
goes above 650kbyte/s (6Mbit ADSL). This occurs with Apache 2.2, Apache 2.0,
FTP server apps, and other small webservers i tried. Ironically, it doesnt
occur with Microsofts IIS 6, which i dont want to use. The speed i get from
IIS is about 580kbyte/s, not really great but alot better. I tried hundreds
of things by now with no success including:
Turn firewall off
Try to find disabled/enabled services that make a difference
Change MTU, RWin
Change TcpAckFrequency
Tune values in Apaches config (although the issue is not just with Apache)
Google for hours and hours
Contact provider for support - they looked at the server last night just to
tell me that everything was in order.
They tested the connection and couldnt find differences in speed between IIS
and Apache greater than 0.5MB/s.
But they probably didnt test it with a "slow" ADSL connection.
Im really at a loss as to what could cause this, i get more than 600kbyte/s
download speed from my old webhosting provider and from most pages on the
net, and the connection bandwidth of this Vserver should be very much
sufficient (100MBit).
Maybe someone here can help me out with this, i suspect some windows patch
is either missing or should be removed for this to be fixed, or some really
strange network setting has to be changed. I reinstalled the server just an
hour ago to install just Apache, and to find the exact same problem. As i
said, this problem occurs with all webserver applications i tested, although
the "speed limit" is a little different for each of them, but it is
constant.
You can try it out yourself, Apache and IIS are running on different ports
with a test file (Mailserver setup, 10MB)
Apache:
http://92.51.140.185:80/mailenablestandard.exe
IIS:
http://92.51.140.185:81/mailenablestandard.exe
I would be happy to hear what speeds you get, maybe i am really the only one
with this problem. A friend of mine tried it and the difference for him was
not as big as for me, but he also got a faster connection...
Thanks,
Dominik
