Slow download speed

Today I had British Telecom (my phone company) come out to sort out my very
slow Broadband speeds and to stop the line keep dropping. I am supposed to
get up to 8 mbit download speeds. The engineer has now put a separate data
cable in to feed my Netgear DG834 Modem (Wired). He tested it with his
laptop and said there were no longer any faults and the speed was up to 6000
kbps.

The line no longer drops but when I tested the download speed with the BT
speedtester is said I was getting 129 kbps.

I have two machines and both experience the slow download speed (both
operate under XP home).

I have tried using an old USB modem to rule out my router (which is new) and
it makes no difference to the speed.

I have replaced the phone cable and the router cables.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Noel

Sounds like an issue you need to contact your service provider about. This
newsgroup supports Microsoft's Broadband Networking hardware and software
only, not networking in general nor other company products.
