Slow download Linux vs XP

I have two notebook computers, one running Win XP and the other
running Linux (Fedora Core 2). I compared the speed to download files
on the computer by downloading a large file on one computer, then
switched the ethernet card and downloaded the same file on the other
computer. I used mozilla firebird as an ftp interface on linux and
internet explorer on xp. I also tried manual ftp on the linux.

On the WinXP I reached download speed of approx. 800 kbyte/s, but on
linux the speed was a 10th of that, approx 80 kbyte/s.

Obviously something is wrong with the setup on my linux box, but I
really need some help on how to correct it!

regards
Fredrik

What kind of connection (cable or adsl?). Are you sure that both programs
are using the same units? Typically little 'b' is bits and big 'B' is
bytes. So 800 kbps approximately equals 80 kB/s (maybe they ARE both same
speed).

I have never noticed any significant difference in internet speeds between
Windows and Linux (dialup or 1500/256 pppoe).

Yep, or duplex mismatch, timing the download of the same file
should show.

On fast connections Linux outperforms M$ easily. AFAIR someone
(mjt?) posted an URL sometimes ago with a nice online connection
speed test.

yeah, my friend had similar issue, it turned out that auto detection of
speed/duplex didn't worked well. Everything started working fine after he
manually set connection options.

I would like to see it, can't you find that link?

Ah, mjt reposted it upon request:

I am connected to the citynet via a community lan. It's supposed to be
10 Mbit/s, and that's more or less the speed I got on the XP computer.
I timed the download and my speed on the linux box really is about a
tenth of that.
