Slow Data Transfer Rate

I have a 2003 file server (2 GB RAM, supporting 24 users, two 2.4 GHz
processors, RAID 5 Array SATA drives) that seems to be experiencing very slow
transfer rates. Connection is 100 MBps. Workstations are all XP Pro. If I
transfer from one workstation to another, the transfer rate is very good. If
I transfer a very large file (ie. 500 GB) directly from the server to a
workstation (while logged on to server), the transfer is very good. The
problem is when I try to transfer large files from the server to a
workstation (while logged on to the workstation). A 500 GB file takes up to
3 hours (if it even completes without losing the network connection).
Also, accessing an Excel or Power Point file (up to 10 MB) on the server from
a workstation is VERY slow to open. Any ideas on what I could check to see
where the problem is? Any help is greatly appreciated. Mark
