slow connection to network shares in explorer

We just migrated a bunch of folders from a novell server to a win 2k3 r2
server and have a couple of drives mapped to letters (G: and H when users
logon.

When you open file explorer to get a file off the network share, it is very
slow to respond (5-10 seconds). After the initial connection then it seems
to be OK for that share, until you reboot. Is there any way to pre-connect
to these shares when you logon so there is no delay when you browse to the
mapped drive?

thanks,
Bill

I presume you've got a login script. If you go to start | run, and type in
G:\ <enter> what happens?

after about 10-12 seconds, the shared drive shows up in a explorer window

If you open it to C:\, what happens?

Are you using AD?

I hope this is actually something like ourdomain.local - not a single label
domain. Correct/

OT, but this should be "hybrid" - in your DHCP server, set the WINS node
type to 0x8. Won't be related to this problem, however.

What's that 2nd DNS server IP pointing to?

In general that looks fine. So, I'm wondering about hardware. Are you using
a hub or a switch? You want to use a good switch. Try swapping out cabling,
switch ports. If you get no joy there, try locking down your server &
workstation NICs at 100/full (rather than using Autosense).

can you elaborate on this?

another domain controller

I don't think its a hardware issue, the connections to the novell server are
extrememly fast. the connections to the windows servers are only slow on
first connection (about 10+ seconds) then after the files are displayed the
connection is fine.
