Slow connection/lost packets to adsl router (note only router and one PC is on network)

I have set up and SMC1255TX NIC on a friends WIN ME box to talk to an
adsl router.

The router (a SAR 130 from solwise www.solwise.co.uk) is configured using a
web based
front end.

The problem is the connection to the router is painfully slow (can
take a minute or more to serve a page from the configuration menu).
The router is fine on my XP system, and my (different) router exhibits
the same problem on his machine - so I don't think the router is at
fault.

At the same time, if I ping the router from a dos box, about 50% of
the time I get one or more lost packet. On one occasion I lost 3 out
of 4 packets.

The router is connected directly to the NIC using a straight through
cable supplied with the router.

I've tried putting the NIC into a different slot to change the
interrupt being used, but havent' found the way of giving it its own
IRQ - it always shares with some other hardware.

I've also downloaded the latest drivers, and upgraded the motherboard
bios and drivers, and removed other cards from PCI slots. The
motherboard is an SIS6309 V1.0.

Any ideas for other things to try gratefully recieved.

I'd suspect the NIC itself is faulty and try another one to test that
possibility.

If the nic is attempting to auto negotiate a connection
speed such as 100 full it could cause this problem. Try
turning off auto negotiate on the NIC and set it for 10 /
half.
