Slow browse on Windows NT world domain - latency 300 ms

Hello,

I work on a company with 2 locations, one in US and one in Romania.
The ping latency between locations is ~ 200 - 250 ms.
We have a single Windows NT domain, with the PDC in US, and a BDC in
Romania.
We have big bandwidth internet connections on both ends ( 2 Mbps )
tunneled and VPN.

The problem is that browsing the NT Domain is slow, ~ 10 seconds to
see the list of computers in Domain, and also ~ 20 seconds to open a
small 64 K file.
I want to mention, that browsing the same folder structure by ftp,
works very well.

I changed different MTU to both ends, but without any results.

Do you know any info about that problem ?
I think many multinational companies had that problem.

Other problem that we see through our VPN, is the copy throughput.
If you copy a file of 1 MB for example, it has a rate of 15 KB/sec (or
140 kbps), but I can copy in parallel let's say 5 files of 1 MB,
having a total of 75 KB/sec.
Do you know the reason of that limitations ?

Tell us about your WINS servers?

How many do you have?

Are ALL the computers (including all servers) WINS clients?

Are the WINS servers replicating fully?

If the answer to the above is "no" or "what WINS servers",
there is your (main) problem (or at least one of them).

Wes, I think you're right, we have only one WINS server in US.
I will try after installing one new WINS in Romania.
What about ~ 20 secs to open a small file.

(I am Herb but that isn't a big deal. <grin>)

Remember to make the two WINS servers REPLICATION
partners.

Every machine must be a WINS client of the SAME
WINS "database".

Notice that "servers" are IMPORTANT WINS 'clients'
TOO!!!
