slow auto-netogtiate 1000Mbps causing netlogon problems

Server: Gateway 975
NIC: integrated Intel Pro 1000 MT, latest driver
OS: Windows 2003 Server

The NIC isn't negotiating the speed fast enough for the netlogon and w32time
services. Here's the order of events in the event log:

00:00 Event ID 6009 indicating startup (Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.02. 3790
Multiprocessor Free)
00:15 Event ID 5719 - "This computer was not able to set up a secure session
with a domain controller..."
00:40 Event ID 32 - Link has been established: 1000Mbps.
01:17 Event ID 17 - Time Provider NtpClient: An error occurred during DNS
lookup of the manually configured peer...
01:18 Event ID 7035 - The Network Connections service was successfully sent
a start control.

If, after the link has been established, I restart the w32time and netlogon
services, both services report success.

I have the driver set to "auto-negotiate 1000Mbps". The only other setting
that works is "Auto Detect". There are various options to force full/half
duplex of either 10 or 100Mbps, but nothing for 1000Mpbs. On the switch, the
only setting we can change is for flow control, and that has no effect. Note
that we have identical servers running netware and they negotiate almost
instanlty.

Any suggestions?

A long shot, but if your running cisco switches, enable port fast or it
takes 50s for the port to come up.

Hi David,

Thanks for your posting here.

I would like suggest that you delay the netlogon and w32time services. You
can set the two services depended on Network Connections service.

Please refer to the following document for the detailed information.

Have a nice day!

Our network admin disabled "Spanning Tree Protocol" on the switch's port,
and now auto-negotiation links at 1Gbps almost instantly.

I always manually set the port speed and duplex on
switches and nics if possible. Any reason you aren't
doing the same other than having to document what what
speed you set switches to?

The driver does not give the option for forcing speed/modeat the Gigabit
level. I can with 10/100Mb, but not 1000Mb.

I think this might provide some additional clarification:

That makes sense. I have a Pro1000 in one of my Dell
boxes and I could've sworn it would let you manually set
gigabit. Hmm that sucks.
