Slow access to server share

I have a client that has a credit card program that simply looks in a certain
folder on a share on the server for credit card requests and then sends them.
Their accounting POS system puts the requests into the folder.
The problem is that it takes about 20-30 seconds to write a 1kb file to the
server the first time...As long as you don't wait longer than about 2-3
minutes, then the speed is fine.
I tested this by creating a batch file that copies a small file to the
windows 2000 server and it takes 20-30 seconds the first time when you run it
also. Then after that, only 1-2 seconds...
There is no power management on the server. I have also turned off all
anti-virus software to make sure that it is not the problem and it had no
effect.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi Michael,

Are you connecting to the share by UNC path or by mapped drive? Can you
confirm that the indexing service is running on the server you are connecting
to?

Is the server your connecting to a DC?
