You might manage a PDA that can x86 programs with a Wifi connection to your
router.

there are quite a few routers which enable this at the router level
rather than needing a PC, and other gizmos available that take the PC
out of the loop. Google is worth a look as it turns up quite a few
interesting articles.

No. You need a "proper" system using SIP or a similar protocol.

I use this: www.avm.de/en on Sipgate, FWD and Gradwell.

I came accross a BT router the other day that was for 'broadband voice'.
It had an adaptor that allowed you to plug a bog standard phone into the
back of it. Wonder if it's possible to doctor that?

No. If you insist on using Skype you will have to have some sort of
computer on. Skype uses a proprietary protocol that won't work with
anything else.

SIP on the other hand is open source so there is an awful lot of available
kit.

Now I've bothered to do some reading on it, it's clear you are more than
correct. That makes skype a bit of lame duck then I guess.

You could check out http://tools.netgear.com/skype/. I don't know
if it's available yet.

Not yet... they are working on it.. there is a prottype wifi handset
available. But nothing in the mainstream so far.

Maybe they will doctor a Linksys router with a custom linux distro and
skype ?
