hi

sorry for lack of detail here, but i just want to see if anyone has
heard of this happening before.

i have a friend who is finding that when he turns on the tv it is
disconnecting his broadband connection (BT Openworld). Not sure if this
is the actual TV or the SKY box, but something is causing it.

he doesnt have sky connected to the phone line either.

I thought it may be power surge/drain when he's switching on tv/sky
that is causing interference on the line and stopping adsl from
working.

anyone know if this is possible or have any comments on this?!

thanks in advance, lee

RF interference from the TV or the Sky box, not uncommon. One guy lost
his ADSL when a neighbour turned his TV on.

wow, so even though there is now wireless connections in place, the
interference from the tv or sky box can knock out the adsl connection?

do you know of any fixes? is there something you can buy or will moving
things around the room help?

thanks again

the mains is a common factor, or radio frequency emissions.

moving around, rotating etc can help. Keeping mains leads away from
phone wires, that type of thing.

Get an AM radio, tune it off station at around 550-600 kHz or 240 kHz
and listen in as you switch stuff on and off. These frequencies are in
the ADSL range and you may get a clue what's the problem.

Something may end up in the skip ;-)

Don't shoot me but I worked on BT Broadband (not Openworld/BT Yahoo
THD. You would be supprised the things that can cause connectio
dropouts.
Once had a customer whose connection dropped every night at 6pm. Turne
out it was the central heating turning on.
Ask you friend to try running a mains extension from the TV to
different socket & see if that helps.
Even had problems caused by faulty wiring on a Jakuzi once!!

Good info Phil, thanks - I'll stick a radio in the van for future RF
problems. I've had a couple of plasma TV's causing dropout problems, also
the usual Xmas lights problem which will no doubt rear its ugly head again
soon...

If it's a 42" plasma, can you chuck it my way? ;-)
