Tell us about it, just got off the phone after proving that my
neighbours SKY router has gone flat...

'Sorry can you call back in an hour (at least) as all our systems are
down', now what is wrong with pen & paper me thinks. An hour before
that my neighbour had been told that there was nothing wrong with the
router, there was a line fault (I had been round there Monday to check
& there was no line problem the router was broke)

They had a half day outage over a very large area (nobody negotiate a
new connection) last weekend.....

I'm starting to get feelings a deja vu now......

Mind you it's fine if you just want a pipe & no support...

....you could go with Pipex - less speed, costs more.

But what's the support like? That is what is going to be the make or
break of a lot of the cheaper ISPs...

They have no tangible support any more.

When I was trying to leave them, the only time I got a positive
response was when I emailed the director and chairman direct.

Before that point, I was lied to, had my account put into a closure
state "in error", delayed, and so on.

This was nothing new.

When they rehashed their users' webspace 12-18 months ago, they fucked
it up - partly because they didn't tell anyone the new FTP server
details, while leaving the old ones active for "updating" (but this
did not update the live site) - ignoring support requests for over two
months on the subject.

My departure was a combination of *really* bad connectivity that I
could *prove* was their fault, being overpriced (I was paying
£23.44/month for a 1Mbit line), non-existant support, and a refusal to
allow me to alter my account to a higher speed without a 12 month
contract.

* using individual.net it would take 20+ minutes to download the
days' headers from 20 groups - many had zero traffic or <50 posts per
day - clicking on a post to read it would result in a wait of ~5 mins,
and very regular disconnections (leading to yet more 20 minute waits
for the headers) - often before the last lot of headers had downloaded
from the previously dropped connection.

- and they *still* fucking billed me when I was out of contract a
month later than I should have been due to their incompetence.

I'm now with Sky - yes, their email (webmail in particular) is
laughable, but it's been no less reliable that Pipex had been of late,
and i'm getting 6-7Mbit connections for £13.44 less per month.

You know what, reading your post gave me strange feeling of deja vu as
it very closely follows my experience with the ISP you are now
satisfied with...

Problem solved; some nob (ahem) had plugged the microfilter into the
unused NTL socket instead of the (previously unused) BT one and didn't
realise... doh!

Not the first & won't be the last. At least you didn't get an
engineering visit arranged to find it for you (well she was a lithe
blond girl...still got charged though)..

You know, I once had a gas engineer come out to fix my combi, and she
was really fit
