I'm just getting a "cannot connect to server" message when I try to
send mail.

I can collect mail fine though...

Same here. I'm trying to send a message via their server as they appear to
be ignoring my tech support emails which are sent via non-Sky servers.

My mailer attempts to send the message every ten minutes. It's been trying
since 6pm yesterday.

C:\>telnet smtp.sky.com 25
Connecting To smtp.sky.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port
25:
Connect failed

mail.sky.com "works" but bounces all external posts back as unknown.

As someone who is thinking of switching from BTYahoo to Sky I was wondering
if this happens very often. I am presuming that you are unable to send any
email at all which isn't very satisfactory.

I can't recall it happening before and I've been with sky for 6 months
or so.

You may find that BT don't close your account but downgrade it to a
free BTYahoo dial up account. It is always handy to keep that going
for times like these. Just dial up for a few seconds to BT once every
couple of months to stop the account getting closed.

Or go in via broadband to the BT portal http://home.bt.yahoo.com/ and use
webmail.
It still works for me after nearly three years.

I've been with them nearly a year & I've never had a satisfactory
email service from them. One of the few emails I did get on that
account (& I had to use webmail to get it)was asking me why I wasn't
using it & when I explained why all they did was change my email
address on their records, so now everything goes to my 'own' server.

If you go to http://www.skyuser.co.uk/ you may just find the reality
about the email service..

I presumed that I would lose my 'btinternet' email address though once I
switched to Sky?

I will actually be using a yahoo.co.uk email address that I have already set
up so I am presuming that I will be okay using that.

I've been with Sky for a few months. Apart from a test at the beginning, I
don't use them for email - I've paid Clara £10/yr for yonks so I can send
from wherever I happen to be.

PS The email to Sky finally went through at 13:30 - had a reply by 17:45.
