Got to make up my mind by tomorrow (Wednesday) to either stay with Sky or go
To Plusnet... I want cheap but not at the expense of lost connections etc.

Can anyone explain in simple terms what the differences are in how Sky and
Plusnet send the broadband signal to my home and why it is Plusnet allegedly
has more problems than Sky ?
Thanks.
Mike.

Sky is unlimited, and not subject to a Fair Use Policy. Sky will be LLU that
means they have their own equipment in the exchange, Plusnet will probably
be the same.

If there is a speed difference between the two providers it might be due to
the router, or their own exchange equipment and tolerance levels.

If Sky has worked flawlessly, plusnet will most likely do also.

There is no difference, unless you have an LLU contract.

Because someone on this group hates plusnet more than they hate sky?

I hate em both :-)

Fed up with the big players. Rather pay a bit more and get a human on
the phone when something goes wrong.

We no longer use LLU, all of our lines are provided on BT Wholesale
provisioned IPStream Connect, WBMC, or FTTC/FTTP circuits.

Depending on the account type you have with us, there may be usage
restrictions/rate limits applied at certain times of the day.

Sky tend to lock their routers, I know that much. We don't lock ours.
LLU circuits aren't subject to BT's Dynamic Line Management systems, so
/may/ yield a few hundred kbps more in throughput (depending on what's
available in your area). Can't rmember off the top of my head, but do
Sky still provide BT Wholesale rented services where they haven't LLU
coverage?

I'd like to think that we're a little more responsive/helpful if ever
something does go wrong. My opinion is of course subject to bias though!

I have had cause to contact plusnet two or three times on behalf of others.
Each time the issue was resolved quite quickly, it was quite unusual that
the first tier support actually was able to understand a complicated
technical issue and sort it out in a timely manner.

Sky aren't quite as good as that, more mixed. Usually good though, and their
first tier again are reasonably competent and have dealt with speed issues
promptly and efficiently.

Both seem to be pretty good ISPs in terms of customer service. If you want
to benchmark customer service, try giving Orange or talktalk. I swear their
first tier of support are chosen for their stupidity.

Plusnet need to start filtering their junk mailings against the MPS
database.
It would be most embarrassing for them to get clobbered, especially
since they make so much of being entirely UK based.

Or I could return it to sender, taped to a brick.

Clobbered by what? MPS is not a government body and has no power to do
anything at all.

LOL.

I've always managed to speak to a human when calling PN. I don't have
any experience of Sky as an ISP. For my usage Sky would be more
expensive and I'm sure they'd keep trying to sell me their TV
services.

PN is good value and has customer service people who can all speak
english. Some of their first line support is not well enough trained
though IMHO. I suspect this is the same everywhere.

PN's own newsgroups are the best way of getting support IMHO.

That's the reason I'm with plusnet. It's cheap and reliable. Tech.
support is also good, the few times I've had to contact them.

Although I have no experience of Sky, I think the 'allegedly' says it
all. With all these things there's a huge sampling effect, so it's
incredibly hard to compare like with like.

Typically, if someone has a serious complaint about something they are
likely to bitch about it to their peers (i.e. check out recent
complaints on here regarding TalkTalk). However, if you're happy you
don't tend to shout about it.

If you believe surveys you can try the ThinkBroadband comparison page:
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/isp/compare.html

According to that Plusnet is better than Sky across the board and is
improving.

"Orange or talktalk. I swear their first tier of support are chosen
for their stupidity." You can add BT to that list
