Funny how things repeat themselves. I asked about whether Orange had a
news server the other day and got a very quick response. Now my daughter
has just gone onto Sky and is asking the same question. Do Sky have a news
server and, if so, what is it called?

If I remember correctly, from reading one of the other Sky
posts/threads, then the answer is *no*.

Mind you there are many other usenet services available for some are
free, others require a one off small payment others charged monthly or
you can by a set amount of downloads (blocks)...

I will not name any, as it is horses for course and all depends on how
and what you use usenet for.

I'm almost certain that they don't.

No

..... but you can get a 3rd party one for around £7/year - we use
http://news.individual.net/ which is run by the University of Berlin -
never yet let us down

That is text only IIRC.
For ~£6 you can buy 25G from astraweb.
For text only that would probably last for years especially as headers are
free.

Nope, no News Servers at $ky, 10 euros/year will get you access to
news.individual.net's text only servers though, and if she's into binaries,
I would recommend Astraweb's pay-as-you-go services.

Thanks for the prompt responses. It is the same as Orange which I more or
less suspected would be the case.

Yes, I'd back that choice, and they currently charge $25 for 90 GB
in case anyone wants binaries as well... www.news.astraweb.com

Yes but -
news.readfreenews.net (www.readfreenews.net) is still free but their sign-up
page has been unavailable for months now.
