What tells you if your exchange is 8/16Mb, and how can you tell, apart from
suck-it-and-see?

samknows.com comes highly recommended as a source of information on
broadband. Bear in mind that the speed you get depends on the quality of
your line and contention in the network.

Hi

I've already looked there (for Formby) but see no mention of 8/16 Mb
capability, only LLU, which I use. Is it disguised?

If your on a LLU exchange you can get up to 16Mb but whether you
actually get 16mb all depends on your line length and quality

Which is true. Sky Gives upto 16MB so every exchange that sky has
enabled with it LLU will give upto 16MB, But that does not mean that
you get that speed. If you order from sky they normally will do a line
test and tell you the speed that your line can achieve, but even that
is a guess, but shoud tell you if you can revcieve the 16mbps broadband

Thanks to Phil and Naza. I had a recollection that I'd read of someone else
whose exchange was capable of only 8Mb, if only as a short-term measure.

May be I dreamt it.

I'm 4.5Km from the exchange and get about 7.6db, but I'm on the 16Mb
package, so thought perhaps my exchange was not 16Mb capable. Presumably,
for the 8Mb package, Sky limit the speed.

But what's the line attenuation?

I'm 4.5K from the exchange, with 63.5dB atten and 12db s/n. I get a
stable 2Mb/s on the free package and could go to the next one up, but an
extra 1Mb/s isn't worth the £5 for me (BT reckon a max of 3.5Mb/s).

Line Attenuation is the strenght of the siginal when it gets to your
router. The longer the cable and the lower the quailty, the quiter the
siginal gets, so to speak. Not you are getting OK speed, I live 2km
from the exhange have attenuation of 54db and 12db SNR, i sync at
2500kbps, BT said i could get 4mbps plus. BT give you an educated
guess but there are toher factors which they cannot take into account
like RF interference and the equipement that is used, so i would be
careful, but with the Mid package you do get the higher downlaod limit
so if you download a lot maybe its worth it.
This is got nothing to do with your problem but my line can do
3400kbps if i manully tweak the setting so that the SNR is 0DB and the
line is stable but that is a fault and i probally need to be reset at
the exhange so that my BRAS profile is cleared and so they exchange
sets my speed accordingly. I know someone who does not live to far
from me and is connected to the same exhange but gets 6mbps. But
looking at your attenuation and you distance i would think that you
really are getting a good speed as after i think 65db ADSL with Rate
adaption does not work and you have to have a fixed rate line.

It about how the siginal is sent. 8mbps is the Max Speed for the ADSL
Verison 1. The was the original specification at which ADSL was
launched. So when youu go for the up to 2mbps or 8mbps you are on ADSL
v1(known simply as ADSL). When you go for speeds that are upto 12mbps
whic are rare you are put onto ADSL2 Which basically gives more speed
for the Frequency range, so has a better way of sending messages so
you can get better speed. When you go for something that is obove
12mbps or upto 24mbps you are put onto ADSL2+ which was a newer
standard for ADSL which has a maxium speed of 24mbps. So sky sort of
limit you by speed depending on the standard they put you on. Take my
connection for example if i was to be put onto the ADSL2+ technology i
would probally get a better speed but it would cost ky more to have
that hardware to support that. In time it will change but not yet.

I'm 3Km straight line, 48 db atnn and 7.1db snr just now. I think my
earlier predicted speed was 3.5Mb/s.
