Sky broadband up and running

Well colour me impressed! I got up, switched on the PC and fired up
Thunderbird to check my e-mails as normal, everything fine. As promised
the router was delivered soon afterwards and I put it to one side and
didn't give it a second thought. I jumped in the shower then had some
breakfast, came back to the PC and my Pipex connection was down, damn,
damn, damn... still had dsl light on the router so reset, but it refused
to connect. Then I thought perhaps I had been migrated, so went and got
the Sky router, unpacked it all and plugged everything in. Straight away
I was back on-line but this time with Sky Max, so simple, so straight
forward, no messing about. Absolutely brilliant!

Total time between me checking my Pipex mail account and being back with
Sky was no more than an hour. It all happened first thing this morning
and I wasn't inconvenienced at all.

The Sky router is currently listing the following data:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
-------------------------------------------------
Connection Speed 5248 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 37.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 7.0 db

Not quite the 14Mbps I had been led to believe I might get, but I am
more than happy with that. Especially as it's only £10pm, and all my
e-mail addresses work, so none of the hassle with the Sky portal others
have experienced.

I'm a little surprised you aren't connecting faster than that - here
are my stats...

Connection Speed 6336 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 51.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 13.0 db

While my noise margin is a little better than yours, your attenuation
is much better...

If you have a wireless adaptor, try plugging the Sky router direct
into the test socket at the BT master - you might notice a hike in
speed, in which case there's something on your internal wiring
dragging it down.

IIRC if you have core 3 connected on any telephone extensions, you can
remove them, as this might reduce noise, and make sure you have no
other masters in the house (!) - I was surprised to find my phone line
went through a second master due to the way BT rewired the phone a few
years ago, and removing it doubled my speed :-p

and then a couple of hours later, the router locked up. "Hmm, strange"
thought I. Never mind, just reset it and off I go again. 3 hours later
it locks up a second time (all the lights on the front panel were OK).
Reset again, checked the forums for Sky problems. Changed the uPnP setting
and checked my line/noise (30.5dB atten, 11dG noise) Worked fine until
about 22:30 and locked up a third time.

Looks like Sky will be getting a call in the morning........

I have had a dg834 for about 2 years and it has never locked up. Perhaps
it's faulty?

Centrino laptop?
Go to the Intel site and get the latest drivers..
at least one of the previous versions caused lockups.

No, no laptop at all. The connection from the router is a 100bT to the
PC. This link stays up 100%.
When I called Sky I was pleased that I got through to their support line
straightaway. However, the call (19 minutes) didn't resolve anything except
I got a vague statement promise that the tier 3 support would call me sometime
in the next 5 days.

Update: I'm running a continuous ping to the easynet/sky network. When the
router "freezes" it actually just suffers from massive packet loss - over
70%, plus DNS lookups fail as a result. Resetting the router _always_ restores
the ping failures to 0%

If you read the line stats before you reboot and after you reboot have they
changed? In particular the noise margin?

Have you tried connecting the router to the test socket behind the master
socket face plate (assuming you have one) this is a good idea as it removes
all your house wiring from the circuit so it makes diagnostics easier.
