Sky Broadband (Sky/Netgear Router & Win98SE)???

Yet again another Sky Broadband question?

We have got a nice old computer running Win98SE (fully patched) connect via
ethernet to a Router.

I am pretty sure that Sky Broadband (MAX) will work on our trusty old
computer, as I will not be using any of the supplied Sky software.

So I would be interested in knowing if any of the group regs have had any
experience of Sky Broadband using Win98SE?

Does the supplied Sky (Netgear) Router work with Win98SE?

If so were there any problems?

PS: I have got my own domain and use that for email (and I am aware of the
email issues with Sky).

BTW: We will be upgrading our PC to a nice new Vista machine in a couple of
months (hopefully Vista's SP1 will be available by then).

The Sky router is a Netgear DG834GT so you will just plug the ethernet
cable into it and your PC should just get on with it. This does assume
you've got DHCP on.

If you are connecting to the router via ethernet, it doesn't care what
operating system you are using as long as your operating system can talk
TCP/IP at it.

Having said that, I wouldn't recommend sticking with Microsoft Windows
98 - it is not supported by Microsoft anymore as far as I'm aware.

Yes I had an old 98se PC used for testing purposes. It connects fine no
problem at all. In fact you do not need to do anything except plug it in.

I am aware of that Paul :-) , but thanks all the same. Mind you it is worth
noting that the only reason MS extended the life of Win98 last time, was
because of many large companies that use still used it, I would think many
still do, as like it or not, Win98SE if kept in shape is still quite
stable.

Although our intention is to upgrade our PC in the next few months,
hopefully by that time the first Service Pack (proper) will be available
for Vista by then!

The only thing that will speed up our decsion is if/when Avast no longer
supports Win98SS, then we will have to upgrade.

Thing is though our PC does everything we want it to do, it might be slow
at times, but it does what we want.

Any New computer we buy will be expected to last at least 4-5 years.

As you will be running a router you don't need any software, just a
network card in your PC.

Thankfully it has already got one, as my current Router/Modem is connected
via Ethernet.

Which is exactly as I though, although the lady at Sky told me "that Sky
Broadband needs Win XP or above". She even put me on hold and supposedly
asked the tech support, who confirmed that, although when I explained that
if it is connected via ethernet, there is not even any need to install any
of the Sky software, she checked again and came back with "they said it
sounds as though you have enough experience, but we cannot guarantee that
it will work!".

So on Monday, I will have the great pleasure in calling Tiscali and
requesting my MAC, although I will ask them if they are willing to make me
an offer to consider staying...

They probably give you some CD which has a presentation on it about the
product, but the product itself requires nothing more than a web browser
and a functioning network card, which you already have.

I recently set up a BT home hub for my in laws without using the
supplied CD, as they have a habit of "customising" Internet Explorer for
you.

This is Sky tech supports way of sayng "we want you to install our bundled
software but it doesn't work on anything less than XP".
Ignore them :-)

There are still loads of Win98 PCs out there. I support quite a lot in
businesses. Most are stable but slow and do occasionally have a barf
with their network drivers. A couple have been put on to modern
equipment due to program compatibility problems and really fly.
Although they are not supported by MS anymore they are probably leaving
the target list of the malware writers as they are a small minority now!
