Sky broadband question

Sky's 5 quid a month offer is now available to me - it looks as though
my exchange is going to be unbundled by the summer of 2007.

The 5 quid offer seems a good one, the LLU offer of a tenner a month
likewise.

Hoewver, I have a Belkin Pre N wireless modem/router that I'm happy
with and would like to keep - is this possible? Can I get the
necessary settings from Sky or will I be forced to use the router they
supply?

Wasn't the pre N a cable router?
Are you on NTL/TW?

No, not on cable - ADSL via broadband

You are supposed to use the Sky router.
It is pre-programmed with your user ID and password.

It is possible to extract it and use a different router.. but it may be
easier to just turn off the wireless in the sky router.. turn off dhcp in
the preN and use it as an access point with the Sky router.

Or the OP could keep wireless turned on on both and have better
coverage in the house...?

It is very simple to extract the username & password from the Sky
router, however, if it's supplied free & functions, why bother?

My Netgear router automatically detected the username and password so you
might be in luck that way. Other wise you could just ring them and claim
that the box has lost the username and password and ask for them.

BTW: Pre-N has *NOTHING* to do with NTL - its an intemediate wireless
networking standard between g and N.

If you're talking about Sky, they won't divulge the username and
password. The admin interface on the router provides no access to the
pages where it would be either.

Wrong it is prewritten into the firmware SKYNET uses, it doesn't
detect it for itself.

As for claiming the SKYNET router has lost user name & paswword.

A) There is no legit way of getting to it, but there is at least one
way to hack it
B) They will ask how you know that it has lost the username & password
& if you can convince them you haven't hacked it you may get a new
SKYNET router free, but if they think you've been acting outside they
TOC then you could be in for a shock, but they wouldn't give you a
username & password, as said above the only way to get it is to hack
the SKYNET box to find it.

Another problem springs to mind & that is SKYNET can & do have thew
facility to remote access their routers so if you changed to another
make of router they would know leading to unknown consequencies.

How do I know that...

A) I have been told by a number of front & back desk support staff
(supposedly for them to upgrade firmware etc remotely, but I'm not
convinced).
B) I found that my remote access has been turned on (I always turn it
off) & the access is only allowed from one server/IP which happens to
be SKYNETs.

Yes I know there will by a flame war over what I've just posted, but
it is what I have been told & experienced has proved it true...
