If you're connecting to a router, any router, with an Ethernet cable,
you don't need anything more than the software in Windows. For WiFi,
you'll use the driver and control applet supplied with the hardware on
the computer.
You will finish with your login details stored in the router, and that
does all the work.
I'm not going to claim it's easy for everyone, I'm a bit of a freak in
this stuff, and don't mind hand editing multi-megabyte data files. A lot
of the bloat is in trying make the installation simple enough for the
customer, while matching what the helpdesk staff are told in their
flowcharts.
