I hope someone can help me understand this.
If you have a domain controller with AD and is a GC server, at a remote
site, and you create a new site in sites and services and add that server to
it, why must it be on a seperate subnet in sites and services in order for
the the computers at the remote site to use it as a logon server? I thought
the computers and server were "smart" enough that when the computers logged
on, the would try and do so at the first domain controller they hit.

server 2003 sp1

TIA
eric

"Active Directory uses the concept of sites to logically represent the
physical network topology. Active Directory uses the site topology to
route replication traffic efficiently. Site topology is also used to
route queries and authentication requests"

Eric,

What could be smarter than using the DC in the same IP subnet?

If you want a definitive answer on how AD does these things, I would
recommend posting in the AD newsgroup.

We have 3 dc's. 2 at the home location and 1 at a remote location,. All are
in the same subnet. Do I have to put the remore DC in a seperate subnet in
order for the workstations at the remote locatin to use the remote dc to
logon?

How do you manage to have a remote site in the same IP subnet? Are you
using some sort of bridge?
