Simple (?) networking help

I've got two PCs and a piece of network cable. The PCs have ethernet cards,
one is running SuSE 9.0, the other is running SuSE 9.1. I want them to be
able to communicate with each other over the network cable so I can copy
files from the old one to the new.

I had thought this would be a simple matter of giving them IP addresses
(198.162.1.1 and 198.162.1.2, masked by 255.255.255.0) and then using the
SuSE tools to set up NFS, but I can't get them to communicate with each
other. Not even pinging works (I get Destination Host Unreachable).

Can anyone please give me some pointers on how to get this up and running.
Am I missing something obvious here?

Thanks

You need a crossover cable to connect two computers directly.

Looking at the RJ-45 Connector with the tang facing away from you, you want:

W/O O/W W/G Bl/W W/Bl G/W W/Br Br/W

| | | | | | | |

W/G G/W W/O Bl/W W/Bl O/W W/Br Br/W

Wire your cable like that, and you'll be fine. One end should already
look like the top line. Just snip off the other end and crimp on a new
connector wired like the bottom.

If you don't have a crimper, it may be cheaper to head to RadioShack or
Best Buy or Office Depot or Staples and buy a crossover cable.
