Signal strength with WRT54G

I have a Linksys WRT54G that I have been extremely happy with. I
recently bought an Averatec 3220 and the wireless signal will drop
off for a couple of seconds every so often. I upgraded the
Averatec's software and then decided to upgrade the firmware on
the WRT54G. It previously had 2.022 and I upgraded to the latest
version 2.04.3

The dropping problem is still there :-( and now the signal strength
has dropped tremendously! It used to be from very good to excellent
in the room I use the laptop in; now it ranges from low to very low.
Nothing else has changed in the setup.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. I don't understand why
the firmware upgrade would lead to a decrease in signal strength.

Thanks,
Kenny Moorman

I'm having the same problem too. I need to downgrade.

I fixed my low signal strength by installing the Sveasoft Satori
firmware from www.sveasoft.com for my WRT54G. It allows you to adjust
the transmit power much higher then the standard firmware allows. I
only had to move my transmit power up a little and it solved my low
signal problems on my wireless clients.

Good Luck.

I have a double thick brick wall between a few of my clients and my WRT54GS
and I downloaded the sveasoft firmware too. It helped, but I also bought a
pair of 7dbi omni on ebay for $25. It helped tremendously!

I just upgraded to firmware 2.04.3 last weekend and I am literally
about 8 feet away from the router and the laptop is connected a 48mbps
with a low signal. I did not have this problem with the previous
firmware.

Really strange that a firmware UPGRADE would DOWNGRADE the quality of
your product...

I'll probably reinstall the old one.
