Signal Strength using a MicroSoft Wireless Network

I'm using an MicrosSoft Wireless G Router (MN-700)and a
MicrosSoft Wirelesss Adpater (MN-720) for my wife's
notebook computer in our house in Florida. The notebook
with the Wirelesss Adpater card is approximately 80 feet
from the Base Station. The floor plan on the house is
very open, only one wall between the base station and the
notebook computer.

The signal strength at the notebook computer is always
Low and the Transfer rates are around 11 Mbps. Both
computers need to be where they are, so the question
is ...

Is there anyway to increase the signal strength of the
Base Station so we can get better signal strenght and
therefore better transfer rates at the notebook area?

I would think that 80 feet is not that far for a signal
to travel in a house. Is that an incorrect assumption?

Thanks in advance for any insight into this one!
