My wife is at a hotel. Her friend is connecting to the wireless fine. My
wife is showing a strong connection to the wireless, but "page can not be
displayed" etc. still results. Hmmm.... We connect this notebook to our
own network with wireless and have connected it to others. We know how to
"View available networks" and do the connect even tho not.... etc.

What else could we do. One notebook hooking up, the other not? hmmmm.....

We've tried release and renew with ipconig and it fails on the dhcp, BUT the
wireless network shows connected with good signal. This is at at a hotel
and another notebook in the same room is connecting fine.
What can be going on where the wireless connection shows strong, the tcp/ip
connections are set to auto and still it can not get to the itnernet?

Is the SSID the same as that of the hotel's? Is the IP in line with
that of the hotel. Make sure that the IP address isn't 169.254.....
etc. If so, you will need to release and renew it via the command
prompt or wireless connection page. If the hotel's router has enabled
encryption, you will receive a signal but will not be able to connect
until you figure out or crack the encryption and configure it into
your notebook's card.

No encryption. The other notebook hooked up fine. My wife's notebook says
the signal is strong.
The "View Available Connections" shows the base station "fairfield" and we
click the "connect even tho" and it does the connect and shows strong.
Still the browser is "No page displayed". We did indeed try to the release
and renw, but get the dhcp error thingy. Hmmm.... we are setup on this
notebook to connect to a domain in the initial logon, but that has not
caused problems before.

Do you have dialup internet access at home? If so, your browser
settings could be configured for it. If you're using Internet
Explorer, click on TOOLS and then INTERNET OPTIONS. Afterwards, click
on the CONNECTIONS tab. Now click on the LAN Settings button and place
a checkmark in the AUTOMATICALLY DETECT SETTINGS box. Hopefully, this
will allow you to browse the net. Chat with you later.

Everyone is so helpful. Thankyou. If i was there i would delete the
connection and reinstall it. Maybe even bridge ti and the unbridge it. I
had this experience before two time when the network connection was
reporting a strong connecdtion, but the browser was still not coneecting to
anything.

The above solution is really bizaree and we didn't try it. This notebook
has connected to varous wireless connecdtions off and on fine. And, l;ike I
said, there is another notebook in the same room (two fine women), and one
is connecting just fine and the other is not. I've actually set up both
notebooks.

The one that is not getting an internet connction is finding the "fairfield"
wireless fine and is reporting a strong connection. But the browser sitill
not finding any site and email, of course, reporting problems. Pinging any
site fails, even with dns addresses and trying to release and refresh dhcp
results in the error we all hate to see.

Sigh. Why would the unit report a strong connection to the wireless and
still the browser not be able to find pages. I actually had my wife enter a
known good dns address 9in the browser in case it was just the dns that was
messed up, but no luck. It definitely is finding the wireless base station.
Then....?????

Somebody has had this experience before?

In whose name is the hotel room registered? I've connected wirelessly to
dozens of hotel/motel systems while travelling. Since this is a perk of
staying in the hotel (or maybe they charge for it), each computer has to be
authorized to logon to the network. You might suggest she call the
front-desk and ask what the procedure is. Did her friend's computer get an
initial authorization screen from the hotel. I haven't seen one without.

I will frequently visit friends staying in local hotels. I can bring my
computer with me and easy detect their wireless networks. The signals are
quite strong, my computer clearly recognizes the network, but I can't logon.
Why? See first paragraph. I'm not a guest and I'm not authorized.

I don't think anything is wrong with your wife's computer. I suspect the
solution is simpler.
