It's running V1.01.28 - like it was ever since I bought it, and for me
I'd say it's been stable. I've been on freedom2surf and now on orange

http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834GT.asp says

Version 1.02.04
1. Updated the ADSL driver to improve performance and
interoperability.
2. Updated the wireless driver to improve performance.
3. "Shared Key" was removed as an option for WEP Security Encryption
Authentication Type on the Wireless Settings page. Authentication type
"Automatic" is now selected for this case.
4. Fixed a problem with VPN passthrough.

So is it worth the risk of updating?

If you are happy with it, why risk breaking it?

Having said that i did flash three DG834G units without any issues. But
this was done because of a major update which cured a problem that was
really getting irritating. Ive never done any further updates, despite
there being some, because my units now work just fine as they are.

I suppose it really depends on if the updates are essential to you.

I should have also said that if you do decide to do it, remember to download
the crash recovery utility from Netgear, just in case you are the unlucky
one who ends up with half a flash !

Agreed. Didn't the V2 firmware also added QoS and other enhancements?

Personally I don't think it's very risky at all - if you have the original
1.02.28 firmware available in the rare case it goes TU.

Usually you receive a disk from your provider, it may be on there together
with the recovery utility. Just make sure you extract your user id and
password from the router first and make a note of it before flashing.

Had no problems doing mine.
