Should I be concerned?

I have a netgear WGR614v3 wireless router and a WG511 wireless PC card for
my laptop.

When I look at the SSIDs using the PC card software under "site survey",
there is a strange SSID that shows up (90% of the time). I don't recognize
the MAC address.
The router software does not show this strange SSID.

This strange SSID is on ch.6 at 40% while I'm on ch.11 at around 80%. if
that means anything.

Are these SSIDs showing access points that I'm connected to with my laptop?
In other words, Am I connected to my neighbors router but he's not connected
to mine??

Should I be concerned? I'm thinking it's a neighbor probably wondering the
same thing :-)

I'm in a single fam home residential area.

thanks
Tim

You're fine.
Your neighbor is not.

That's just their AP. You're not connected to it. Ignore it.

Are you usng WEP or WPA or some other encryption? If not then your neighbor
could probably snoop on your activities and maybe even hack into your
'puter.

You can select which router (SSID) you want to connect to in Windows
wireless configuration.
*But* if I were you, I would enable WEP as soon as possible, this way you
will only connect to your router and your neighbor(s) won't be able to even
if they can see your SSID.

There is no reason for concern. You can see other SSIDs without being
conncted to them. Make sure you secure your WLAN as follows:

1. Switch off SSID transmission
2. Enable MAC filtering.
3. Enable WEP or WPA encryption.

This will make it very difficult for your connection to be hijacked.

Regards.
