I am trying to backup my win98se machine to a Win2000 machine by copying the
98se c: disk from the WinXP computer over wifi but I get a Sharing Violation
when trying to copy c:\windows\win386.swp. I've tried this with the 98se
machine logged out and sitting at the logon prompt and also with it logged
on to an alternate account. But the result is always the same. What can I
do?

That is your swap file and is in use any time Windows is running. Files in
use cannot be copied.

The good news is that Windows creates that file if it doesn't exist so there
is no need to copy it.

Forget the WinXP part. I'm on a Win2000 machine and trying to copy files
from a 98se machine.

Thanks, Carey.

But I have a batch file doing an xcopy and it aborts when it hits that file.
Is there a way that I can keep it running and skip over this file? I'm
trying to automate backups.

In a batch process where the files are always going to be different and you
want to copy the hidden and system files? Not that I am aware of.

Otherwise, don't copy the hidden or system files and you'll be okay or batch
the majority of the copy process but manually copy the directory that
contains the .swp file...usually C:\ or C:\WINDOWS
