Sharing a printer with XP

Hello,

I'd be eternally grateful if you could point me in the dirction of any
screens or self-help documents that explain how to set up printer sharing for
a home network. (Or general instructions.)

I know there's a wizard, but every time I run it, it screws up my internet
connectivity.

Here's the situation:
1 Desktop PC that is wired to the internet via Cable Modem and Linksys
Wireless Router.

1 Laptop PC that also connects to the internet via the wireless router.

Both computers can see the internet OK, as well as send and receive e-mail.
Both PCs are running XP. Pro on the desktop, Home on the laptiop.

Problem: I'm just trying to share the printer that is attached to the
desktop PC. The laptop can see the printer but whenever I try to print
something, it times out and the error says it was unable to print the
document.

I've head it's relatively easy to share a printer, especially between XP
machines, but I'm having a hard time getting it to work. I've run the File
And Print Sharing Wiz, but after the "Home Network" is set up, I lose
internet connectivity on the laptop.

Can you offer any advice as far as KB articles, etc.?

Thank you very much in advance.

You really should post to the microsoft.public.windowsxp.printer_fax
newsgroup since we support Microsoft's Broadband Networking hardware and
software in this newsgroup, but do this:

On the PC with the printer attached, open Printers and Faxes (generally on
the Start Menu, but you can also reach it through Control Panel. You should
see the icon representing the printer. Right-click the icon and select
Sharing... from the menu. On the Sharing tab, put a dot in the radial,
"Share this printer" and then name it something short and sweet. Click
Apply and then OK.

Now go to one of the other computers, open Printers and Faxes, and select
Add a printer in the left pane. Next on the first page, then select A
network printer or a printer attached to another computer, then click Next.
Put a dot in the radial next to Browse for a printer, then Next. The screen
may take a few seconds to locate the printer you shared (paragraph above),
then when it shows highlight it with a single left-click and select the Next
button. Drivers should automatically install for you, if necessary.

Ooops. Thought it was a router configuration problem. Sorry.

Yes, I did all the basic setup steps - Sharing the printer, browsing for
Shared Printers, etc. But still no dice, that's the reason for my question.
But thank you very much for the reply. Cheers!

suggested earlier.

Make sure that the PC is running when you printing to the shared
printer (that's attached to that PC). It's not magic.
