i have set up a basic home wireless network (ms-700) w/ a pc (xp pro) and a
laptop (xp home, i know, it was a slip up, forgot to check the box when i
ordered it). Several problems exist. Access denied on files on pc from
laptop, laptop unaccesible ffrom pc, printer doesn't exist from laptop. i've
allowed sharing and all the other protocols suggested on the trouble shouter
and am reasonable sure its not security (disabled software firewalls).
Problem is, i don't know what it is. Do i have to have xp pro on both
machines for this to work? or is there another fix i haven't found yet?

Well since this is a Windows XP Firewall & or security issue you might
try over at the following newsgroup.

microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web

The only ideas I have other then that are configure your software
firewall to allow file & printer sharing, also create an account on both
computers with the same user name & password to see if that helps. If
doing both of those ideas don't help either someone else will have to
chime in over here or you might try the newsgroup I pointed out.

Please do not contact me directly or ask me to contact you directly for
assistance.

If your question is worth asking, it's worth posting.

If it’s not worth posting you should have done a search on
http://www.google.com/ http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q= or
http://news.google.com/froogle?hl=en&tab=nf&ned=us&q= before wasting our
time.

If I sound hostile or arrogant you need to read the following before
posting a question "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way" at
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html (The site I've linked
to just has this article I think people should read before posting a
technical question.)

funny you should mention that, the software firewalls have been disabled (its
in the router), but pro keeps trying to turn them back on, unsuccesfully, and
in the process, turning off certain antivirus programs (norton). i wonder if
there is a much larger problem here than just file sharing! I'll check that
other newsgroup and see what they say, thanks

Your router firewall is for external intrusions, please turn it back on
immediately. The Windows Firewall will not interfere with Local Area
Network transmissions, however just "turning off" anything Norton doesn't
work. It keeps running in the background. Try temporarily uninstalling
Norton, restart the system, and then see if you don't have connectivity on
the LAN.

yeah, i know, and its on, its the software (on the computer, not the router)
firewall that's been dissabled, and i've tried dissabling the norton, (and
all the other spyware etc...) and that doesn't solve the problem.... i still
think its the xp home vs xp pro aspect... they just don't get along.

The Home vs. Pro is not the factor, Mike. Quite honestly, if you "exit"
Norton from the Systray icon, all you are doing is shutting down the icon
itself and none of the rest of the stuff will stop. Just a little uninstall
(good luck getting everything Norton to uninstall - and if you have trouble
their web site has instructions and an uninstall program), followed by a
restart of your system, will probably provide you with proper networking.

The only way to be sure the software firewall is disabled is to
uninstall it. If you are running Zone Alarm you will still have it's
settings after an uninstall so the TCP/IP stack would have to be rebuilt
after uninstalling that beast. If you are using Symantec for anything I
strongly urge you to find something else, anything else to do the job as
they waste CPU cycles & several pieces of there software are know to
cause serious problems with both Windows & Microsoft Office. The
"officeav.dll" file is known to cause serious problems in word & most
likely in the other programs in the office suite. I have some examples
of it causing problems in the following link.

http://www.support.microsoft.com/sea...2&ast=3&mode=a

As for causing problems with windows here is one example once again from
Microsoft so I think you should be able to trust it. They do cause
other problems this is just the first one that came to my head. Here is
the link to the article that tells you who is to blame in the cause
section of the article.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;313458

Here is the article that just shows you how to fix the issue caused by
Symantec.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281967/

So please get rid of the beast. I personally use AVG for my antivirus
software. You can get it over at http://www.grisoft.com or
http://free.grisoft.com I'd try the second link first that way you can
try a fully functional version & if you want you can purchase the other
version if the free one doesn't fit your needs or if your computers
don't qualify for the free version. The free trial software I hope
works just as good. In my experience most trial software from antivirus
vendors will only detect a virus & not remove it.

Please do not contact me directly or ask me to contact you directly for

If your question is worth asking, it's worth posting.

If it’s not worth posting you should have done a search on
http://www.google.com/ http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q= or
http://news.google.com/froogle?hl=en&tab=nf&ned=us&q= before wasting our

If I sound hostile or arrogant you need to read the following before
posting a question "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way" at
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html (The site I've linked
to just has this article I think people should read before posting a
technical question.)
