Sharing folders on an external HD

I am able to share folders on any partitioned drive on my PC's internal
HD (e.g., e:\files). I can not, however, seem to get folders on my PC's
external HD to show up on my laptop as shared folders. Is this a known
limitation or am I doing something wrong?
