Hi,
I am sure this has been asked many times in some form or the other,
however I didnt find a direct answer. Would appreciate your help and
direction in solving this problem.

I have a Toshiba laptop with win/98 and a Dell laptop with WinXP home
connected to the internet via a belkin 4 port wireless router. I can
surf the web etc from either of these. The problem is that I am not
able to set up the home network on the win98 machine with the winxp CD
as was directed in the wizard. When I run the cdrom I get a box
asking for the win98 disc to get a file called netserv.cat (?). Since
I cant find that on the cdrom the setup hangs after that. Does anyone
know how I can fix this problem so I can share files between the 2
machines.

I tried sharing between the winxp and another machine(work laptop)
also on winxp and those work fine.

Thanks
ram

There's no need to run the XP wizard -- you can configure the Windows
98 network settings manually. Go to Control Panel | Network and make
these settings. Since the 98 computer has Internet access through the
router, steps 1a and 3 are already done:

1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:

a. TCP/IP protocol
b. Client for Microsoft Networks
c. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

a. IPX/SPX protocol
b. NetBEUI protocol
c. Client for NetWare networks

3. Configure the network card's TCP/IP properties to obtain an IP
address automatically.

4. Set the workgroup name to the same name as the Windows XP computer
uses (default for XP is MSHOME).

5. Set the Access Control to User-level.

Then, right-click and share any desired disks, folders, and printers.
Access the XP computer through Network Neighborhood.

I've been having trouble accessing my XP computer from my W98 computer
(but not the other way round). I tried the above, and the only
difference on my 98 box is that Access Control is set to Share. When
I tried to change it to User level, it asked me for the location of
the user list. Nothing I entered seem to do the trick:
1. Mshome -- the workgroup
2. Emily -- the XP computer name; the error message was the "unable
to access" one
3. Evelyn -- the 98 computer name. It took this, and after
rebooting, I tried to share out a folder, but there were no users on
the list. When I clicked Add, I got
"You cannot view the list of users now. Try later." I checked the
User applet, and there is one user--the one I set up with the same
logon and password as the XP computer. Also, the XP computer lost its
view of the 98 folders.

I reset the Access Control to Share, and shared out the folders; now I
can print from the 98 computer to the printer on the XP box, I can
ping the XP computer from the 98 box; I can run a "dir" command on a
shared XP folder from the 98 box; I can access folders on the 98 box
from the XP computer, but I cannot access folders on the XP computer
from the 98 box; I get the familiar message "\\Emily is not
accessible. No permission to access resource." I turned off the
Windows XP firewall, and my ZoneAlarm is set to show my network in the
trusted zone. The permitted IP range includes the IP address of the 98
computer as shown on ipconfig.

WTF next?

Oops. I made a mistake in #5. Set the Access Control to Share-level.
User-level isn't available in a workgroup. I'm sorry for any problems
that I might have caused.
