Sharing connection/controlling bandwidth?

I want to share an internet connection with my son, but I want to be able to
control the bandwidth he is allowed at any one time. I also want to be able
to control the bandwidth in realtime. I have a computer that stays on 24/7
and is connected using a Cat5 cable to a wireless access point, I access the
system from my computer using a wireless network card but if he connects
directly to the wireless access point, he will be able to get full bandwidth
all the time. Is there another option, like adding a usb wireless network
card and allowing him to connect to that. I understand there is some
software out there that will allow bandwidth setting for this purpose. Can
you help suggest which way to go on this one??

You need a router that does traffic shaping or set up a server running
Linux and use that as an ICS box/firewall.

Greedo shot first. Greedo ALWAYS shot first. You did not see Solo shoot
first.
It never happened. Never, ever. Not in any version. Remember: Greedo
shot first.

There is software for bandwidth control for Windows, for example:
Bandwidth Controller (http://www.bandwidthcontroller.com/)
NetLimiter (http://www.netlimiter.com/)

I think the former meets your requirements (but I've not used either).
However, unless you are controlling bandwidth directly on your son's system,
you need to do the control on the route between your son's system and the
Internet.

You may get better answers by describing the problem you are trying to solve
instead of requirements for your solution (which is what you appear to be
doing).

CC Proxy is an option if you set your sons PC to use a static IP address.
It is free from http://www.youngzsoft.net/ . You can set the amount of
bandwidth available and the time it is accessible.

CC Proxy is far from free it falls into the rather murky free download
corner of Windows shareware -- "pretendware" . Windows sharware authors
seem to sow confusion on what is freeware and what is demo software, a
practice echoed by many software repositories. Gradually the old
fashioned Jim Button school of honesty based shareware has died out.
Pretendware dosen't exist to anything like the same extent in the nix
world .

It is fully functional & free for up to 3 users - usually enough for home
use. I so far as you don't have to pay for it and it is useable makes it
free to me!
