Sharing BT Basic Broadband

Hi,

A friend is considering the new BT Broadband Basic and on looking at BTs web
site to see just how basic "basic" is, I notice they say it can only be used
by one PC.

Does anyone know is there any reason the connection could not be shared
using a router, or have they some way of preventing this? I`m sure it could
be shared using Internet Connection Sahring but this would require both PCs
to be running.

TIA

Des.

It will work fine with a ADSL router and can be shared etc..

However, make sure your friend realises that BT Broadband Basic says the
usage limit is 1GB a *month*

There are much cheaper/better offers out there from the likes of
Metronet/Plusnet/Bulldog etc..

Regards
Sunil

Thanks for the quick responses.

I have now persuaded him to go for the standard Broadband. As for cheaper
packages, my friend is of the opinion that BT give a better quality service
thats worth paying a bit more for. I do not share this view.

Point him at the forums on www.adslguide.org or ask some opinions here
before he signs up.

Unfortunatly many people have this view. ADSL Guide would be a good resource
along with www.uk.ciao.com etc for reviews. They are neither cheap nor
provide particuarly great service.

Diseconomies of scale play a factor - they scrimp on decent support to meet
the large number of customers. Smaller ISP's aren't so up em selevs so
actually go for good value, great service etc as a USP.

Best of luck convincing him; I was relived to see that the BBC at least made
some mention of plusnet offering a better cheaper package at last.

There is one born every minute... as the saying goes.
You could tell him that whichever ISP' he uses the DSLAM at the exchange is
in BT's hands anyway, (with the very rare exceptions where the ISP has
installed their own e.g Bulldog in large towns).
Regards,
Martin

As you say, the BT website say 1GB pm. But in some places, just to confuse
matters, it says 1Gb upload/download per month.

That's about 125 megabytes a month. I'm also not clear whether that amount
is total of download and upload or each.
