You'll need some pretty expensive directional antennae.

Its not generally cost effective unless you're a business using it to
create an office WAN and would otherwise be using either leased lines or
ISDN/dialup.

If you have good line of sight between the two of you, you could try this
but you are going to need external antenna and a degree of luck. My guess is
that if you are happy to spend about $100 on antenna about the same again on
poles, brackets and pigtails, it should - all things being equal - be
reasonably "do-able".

Not sure where you are, but to give you an idea on antenna prices:

http://www.wirelesspro.co.uk/store/c...lt.php?cPath=5 - UK
supplier

http://www.rangeextender.com/24ghzantennas.html - US supplier

As Mark M pointed out though, this may not be cost effective for domestic
use unless you take a fairly long term view. There is also a real chance you
will end up with some quite snazzy hardware that still doesn't quite work.

I suggest you check prices of antennas, pigtails, masts etc, then see if you
need to upgrade your AP (has to support ext antenna), ditto the card at the
other end. If you still reckon it's worth a crack you might well pull it
off, just don't bank on it.

IMHO thats Bullsh*t.

If you've some evidence of successful use of pringles tubes to create
antennae capable of forming a wireless link over 1 mile, please do post it.

OTOH they do make quite good receivers, if you're wardriving.

I built a Coffee Can Cantenna, but it only picks up about a block.... but,
if you get one of those old Prime Star Satellite dishes.... (they are no
longer used so you might get it free)... then you can install a
Cantenna at the feedhorn focus point, and possibly get your mile or more....
I have read that some people have received wi-fi signals from 10 km 'line of
sight' using a Prime Star Satellite dish....
