Sharing BB over ethernet

A friend wants to share a BB connection over his ethernet network. As he
can't use a router, he planned to install a second NIC in one PC and
connect the CAT5 cable to the BT BB box to that, then use that PC as a
host for ICS.

When he installed the BT software, the host could no longer connect to
the rest of the network.

Any thoughts as to why it didn't work? Should this be possible?

I wondered if the software had re-configured the IP addresses, they
don't use a DHCP server.

The problem is with ICS. Check the IP address that has been assigned, it is
likely to be 169.n.n.n or 192.n.n.n which is likely to be different to the
current network defaults.

Ethernet router from CAT5?

Sorry, my posting wasn't clear. He didn't get as far as setting up ICS,
just the BT software, what ever that does. Is it needed?

It's a pity you're not more expansive?

What OS's is he using?
How is he connecting to the ADSL?

You say `BT' but is he using some other ISP that's utilising the BT phone?

If he installed the `BT' software before he installed the second NIC then
there's a good chance the `software' altered his NIC setting, ergo: his comp
can't `talk' to his Lan.

I'm at a bit of a loss to see what you are trying to achieve. Why not use
a router ? With the setup you describe, I can only see it possible to
connect two computers to BB; One direct, and one via ICS, and the one
connected direct would have to be on all the time in order to share access
with the second !

The connection between the two PC's would be via a crossover cable. Give
each card on the ends of the crossover a static IP address. Let the one
plugged into the modem.

What modem are you using that gives you a RJ45 socket.

Because the network is wired using ethernet cable.

XP, not sure which version.

The BT box has an RJ45, and expects to connect to a PC via a CAT5
(possibly twisted) cable.

BT OpenWoe, AFAIK

I don't actually know what the BT software is for, I thought the ADSL
connection appeared as a (virtual) DUN connection.

Can it be set up manually?

Do you mean 10base2 coaxial cable?
If so, a cheap 1 port ethernet router from ebuyer, and a small hub
with a 10base2 uplink connection. will work just fine.
