Urgent help required please -

I'm trying to share an ADSL internet connection between two PCs.

One (with Win Me) has a USB modem with a working internet connection. It
has an ethernet connection to a Wireless Access Point, and the other PC (Win
XP) has a USB wireless adapter. I have successfully configured the LAN
manually (ie static IP addresses for both machines and the Access Point) and
the 2 PCs can see each other ok.

If I give the IP of the machine with the modem as the other machine's
'Gateway', should the internet connection be shared, or am I trying to
achieve something impossible?

(The ISP is BT Openworld, and I have been unable to use the modem/router
which I was using in a previous setup as the protocols are wrong. BTW, the
ICS wizard has failed to work on either machine.)

You're correct. You'll also need to set the DNS server IP addresses as
well. Easiest way is to use the ones that your ISP uses. If you can't
find them easily enough go to your ISPs help page and look up the Mac
setup help, they're nearly always in there.

I set up a broadband LAN fine, but a neighbour went for ADSL, one machine
its fine but he wanted to add his second machine so bought a modem/router(
read reviews, easy to set up and great) so he bought it, he never bother to
read instructions and so it didnt work, he took it back saying it was
faulty, got another brand, same luck, he wouldnt listen to me (he doesnt
even know howto scandisk!) and thought he would ask a expert, that expert
said he couldnt lan a XP machine and 98SE machine as the XP wouldnt allow
it, i played around for 30 sec (i dont like helping people who wont listen,
expect you to do everything while they watch foobal and wont make you a cup
of tea) anyway i got it so that each machine could see each other, and thats
simple, after that i wouldnt do anymore, now 2 months later he still hasnt
set up his lan. I even found him some websites to help, and NG's but he
wanted me to read them out to him...........i then left.

>should the internet connection be shared<

You'll need proxy server/gateway software running on the Win 98 PC to allow
its connection to be shared with your other PC.If you moved the ADSL link to
the XP machine, you could use the connection sharing feature already in XP.

WindowsME has Internet Connection Sharing (as does 98SE).
