Shares Not Responding

I have several Windows 2000 Servers that periodically drop their shares.
When this happens the server still responds to pings and is responsive. A
reboot brings all of the shares back, but I havn't any idea what causes them
to drop. When I do a Net View \\ServerName it just sits there. When I look
at the open connections and open files in the OS there are none. There are
no entries in the Eventlog.

Here is the configuration of the servers:

IBM xSeries 235 running Windows 2000 Server with SP4 and all post hotfixes
(thru MS04-038).
IBM Director Agent
Trend OfficeScan
CA BrightStore backup
CA Unicenter RCO
CA Unicenter USD (software distribution)

Member Servers on an NT4 domain. Only network services installed are Unix
Printing Services (LPD)

What tools can I use to troubleshoot this?

Thanks,
Stan Cooper

When the server drop the share, then go to Run -> services.msc and see the
status of "Server" service. If this service is stopped then you will not be
able to access the share, so Enable this service and Start it to access the
share.

Thanks,
Puja

I had a server drop the shares again today and the server service was not
stopped and neither was the Computer Browser service. I attempted to stop
the service, but it hung while stopping and didn't post an entry in the
eventlog. This is a production server so it had to be back up and with no
idea of how to troubleshoot it, I had to reboot it. That works to "fix" the
problem, but it will come back. The problem is that I can't point my finger
at anything that is happening to cause this problem. Does anyone have any
tools or perfmon things I should run to troubleshoot when this happens?

Thanks,
Stan Cooper

I had the problem on yet another server this morning. I tried to restart
the server service and received an error stating that it Could Not Stop the
Server Service - Error 1053 - Service did not respond. Does anyone have any
ideas what could be causing the server to stop serving up shares? Does
anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this the next time it
happens?

Thanks,
Stan Cooper
