Hello, would appreciate any information source guidence and/or an answer to
the following problem...mainly information source "how to" guidence.

System: Win 2003 server, 31 pc's, two shared networked printers

Problem: Shared printer resource on LAN can not be added to a client pc. It
is password protected from being added.

When you are loged into the client pc as a user (prehaps as an
administrator, I'm not sure if that was tried, not my system and I was an
observer) anyway, loged on to the client and accessing printer/faxes from
control panel and we ran through the steps to add a printer. At the point
were you are allowed to find printers available on the LAN and in making the
selection of that printer from the list (this is a single domain) and after
selecting the printer, a dialog login box requesting user name and password
comes up.

The systems owner tried various login combinations in the login box without
success.

Now this client pc has access to one of the two printers. The printer
available is hosted on another pc with a different client name called
reception recption\hp 2200 and is indicated to be the default printer. The
printer we want to add is hosted on sta1\hp2200.

Half the systems pc's were originally setup to print to recption and the
other half were to sta1. This pc was obviously taken out of a recption
location and placed into sta1's environment, yet it still prints to this
printer over the LAN. If you go to any other sta1 printer client pc and
attempt to add recption's printer the same thing happens. Printer addition is
halted by password request.

We are baffled as to how and why we are being denied this resource addtion.
It is apparent that the client pc's were locked down to a specific printer
and denied switching between them. My main question is what configuration
arena is responsible for this action. Are we not logied in with appropriate
authority to manage shared resources, eg admin priviliges or are we facing
rights and permission issues from the server side, or user group policy
situation? I am not a Net admin. This is new territory for me.

Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated. Please email me if you like.

You're using AD, I presume. What are the client OSes?

It's not actually password protection - it's NTFS security.

I suggest you re-do your printer setup in general - get JetDirect cards (or
similar) for all printers, assign them static IP addresses or use DHCP
reservations, and share the printers from the server (or a dedicated print
server). All clients can point to the server to access the printer shares. I
don't like relying on a workstation to share anything in a domain - it will
slow down the poor user's PC when people print, and you run into all kinds
of fun like you're experiencing now. With more than a small handful of
users, sharing from a workstation at all is not advisable. Save yourself
time & money & just network the printers.

You're welcome - I hope they help. Centralizing stuff can be a big aid in
keeping your network running smoothly.
